I headed to the doctors office Monday morning for my follow up ultrasound. After checking in I proceeded to fill out some paper work while doing the pee pee dance in my chair. You see, in order to prepare for an external ultrasound they ask you to drink 3-4 glasses of water in the hour preceding your appointment. So, I did as I was told, but let me tell you that's a lot of water to drink all at once, and I'm pretty good about drinking my water. So, it's a good thing I have good self control else I would have peed myself right there in the waiting room. When I was called in for the appointment nice ultrasound tech lady, Amy, told me that I could empty my bladder since they would get a better peek with an internal ultrasound given how far along I was. Wha!?! I squirmed in my chair for 20 minutes for nothing!?!
This ultrasound was so much better and cooler than the one at the hospital. First of all, they have a monitor mounted on the wall where I could see everything that the tech could see. Blob, another blob, swirly blob, oooh what's that blob? That blob is the baby you say? Interesting. Zooming in - oh shit it kinda does look like a stumpy gummy bear blob. And then there was a bulge in the middle of it and it was thumping. It was the heart beating! Neato. 160 beats per minute, a good rate.
The tech did various measurements and the baby is measuring the right size for the length of my pregnancy and all the bits that are supposed to be there are. She asked me if I wanted a picture to take home. Who would say no to that? I kind of wanted to ask her if anyone ever declined, but I was too smiley to be snarky.
When I was able to show the picture to Bill after he got out of work, I was pointing out that really it was a baby in there, not just a blob. See, here's the head, and the freaky alien tail and see these little stumps, those are the arms. And I haven't been able to stop referring to it by the name "Stumpy" ever since. I'm sure I've already scarred this child for life. Bad mommy.
Here's stuuuummmpy.....
