Phew! The secret is out. Well, it's out to our families at least. We had been anticipating this for a while and were nervous in that excited kind of way about revealing our news.
We really wanted to be able to tell our families in person, and what better time than at Christmas! We had already bought Bill's parents a digital picture frame as a Christmas present before we knew that I was pregnant. Once we knew that I was, I immediately thought of the idea to pre-load it with some pictures that would give us away. Since we were staying at my parents' for a day or so before we headed to Bill's for Christmas eve, and I knew that I wouldn't be able to hold it in for long, I wanted to think of a fun way to tell them as well. After much searching (have I mentioned that I am picky?), I found a baby block shaped Christmas ornament that we would be able to give as an early present since it was a decoration.
So, we had our plans, then we just had to execute them. We waited until Saturday night after my dad got back from picking up my brother from the train and everyone had finished dinner. I brought out the wrapped box that contained the ornament and explained that we had gotten them this new decoration. My mom admired the box it was wrapped in, but eventually got to the contents. Everyone was a bit speechless and surprised, but definitely happy.
It was hard the next day to not ruin the surprise that we had planned when I dropped Bill off at his parents' house, but I held out until Christmas eve when we were set to both be there to exchange gifts with his family. Though we didn't plan it this way, the photo frame was the last gift to be given. We told them that we had pre-loaded it with some pictures in order to show them how it works. So, I set it up and turned it on. The first picture was simply text that said "Merry Christmas, Grandma and Grandpa" and Bill's mom picked up on it immediately and started to cry. It took Bill's dad a bit longer to figure out what was going on (maybe the picture of me with the digital pregnancy test tipped him off), but once he did we got a heartfelt "well, that's fucking great."
I don't know that we'll be able to top this Christmas gift in the future.
