30 weeks

Bill came with me yesterday for my 30 week appointment so that he could meet the midwife and practice the driving route to the hospital. It's a bit further away and prone to some more crappy traffic situations than the original hospital we were planning to go to, so we want to be sure that Bill will be able to get us there when it's time for the big show. The appointment was with Sharon again, and I really really like her as a provider. I really feel cared for, and not just medically. I had forgotten that our hospital is the teaching hospital for Harvard, so I was a little surprised when the nurse who weighed me and took my blood pressure asked me if I would mind a student coming in for my appointment, but I figured, sure, why not? We met an enthusiastic medical student who measured my belly to measure my ute, but used fancy terms like "fundal height" to refer to measurement. He also poked and prodded to feel the position of the baby and could tell that Stumpy is still head down facing my back. He wasn't as gentle as Sharon has been, but eh, he's learning. I still think it's cool that they can feel this, as all I feel is jello jigglers when I poke around.

Sorry for the dark picture this week, but it was rather gloomy this morning.

Development Report:

Your baby's about 15.7 inches long now, and she weighs almost 3 pounds (like a head of cabbage). A pint and a half of amniotic fluid surrounds her, but that volume will decrease as she gets bigger and takes up more room in your uterus. Her eyesight continues to develop, though it's not very keen; even after she's born, she'll keep her eyes closed for a good part of the day. When she does open them, she'll respond to changes in light but will have 20/400 vision — which means she can only make out objects a few inches from her face. (Normal adult vision is 20/20.)
